Baba Jarnail Singh Ji is one the greatest Sikh Parchaarik (preacher) of the 20th century. Baba Jarnail Singh Ji is one the greatest Sikh Revolutionist of the 20th century. Baba Jarnail Singh is on the greatest Sikh Shaheed of the 20th century. Sant Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa, Bhindranwale was born in 1947 in the village Rode, in Panjab. He was the youngest of seven brothers. He was the married to Mata Pritam Kaur. And the father of two sons.

At the age of seven Baba Jarnail Singh Ji was entrusted to Baba Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Bhindranwale, the 12th head of Damdami Taksal, a Gurmat centre, which was founded by Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji who laid down his life in 1757 defending Sri Harmandar Sahib's sanctity against the Afghan invaders. Baba Jarnail Singh Ji received Gurmat education and training at Mehta Chownk, Jatha Bhindran through Baba Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji and his successor Baba Giani Kartar Singh Ji.

In 1977 Baba Giani Kartar Singh Ji passed away as a result of a car accident. Baba Jarnail Singh Khalsa was chosen as the successor of Baba Giani Kartar Singh Ji before Giani Ji passed away. So, in August 1977 Baba Jarnail Singh Ji became appointed as the head f Damdami Taksal.

For five years Baba Jarnail Singh Ji toured Panjab and other parts of India in spreading the message of Sikhi and preaching Gurmat. Young Sikhs had fallen away from the path of Sikhi, disregarded their Sikh appearance and resorted to alcohol and drugs. Baba Ji's message appealed especially to the Sikh Naujawan (youngsters) who in their thousands started keeping Kesh (unshorn hair) again, donning dastaars (turbans) on their heads, stopped taking intoxicants and begged to be blessed by Amrit by the Panj Piaare. Baba Ji's message was simple but powerful. He urged Sikhs to become Amritdhari, disregard drugs and alcohol, not to kill innocent people and to live in accordance to the Guru's teachings and principles.

Being a true Gursikh and one who does not fear to speak the truth, Baba Jarnail Singh Ji fearlessly exposed the hypocrisy of the Akali leaders such as Baba Harchand Singh Longowal, Mr. Badal and Sukhjinder Singh. These so called Sikh leaders were called 'Sikhs of Indira Gandhi' by Baba Ji. Baba Ji not only preached Sikh but practically lived the message of the Guru's. He fearlessly demanded total equal rights and justice for Sikhs and like a lion fought against anti-Sikh cults, deras, and movements such as the Narakdharis (also known as (Nakli) Nirankaris) and the Arya Samaaj.

Indira Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister during the time, saw Baba Ji's growing popularity and movement within the Sikh Youth as a threat to her dictatorship style rule. As a result she started using false and distorted propaganda to brand Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale as an 'extremist' and 'militant'. Government agents infiltrated the Sikh movement and committed crimes in order to discredit the Sikh movement and help to justify the Indira Gandhi's plans to attack the Sikh religion.

On June 1st 1984, Indira Gandha ordered a full-scale attack on the holiest of all Sikh shrines, Sri Harmandar Sahib. This army attack was code named 'Operation Bluestar'. Indira Gandhi used the excuse that she wanted to flush out "extremist militants" led by Baba Jarnail Singh Ji who were "hiding" in Sri Akaal Takht Sahib Ji. However, the truth was that Mrs Gandhi ordered a full-scale army attack on Sri Harmandar Sahib during the Shaheedi Gurpurb (Martyrdom day) of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the Fifth Nanak. This is one of the busiest times in Amritsar when Sri Harmandar Sahib has large gatherings of Sikhs travelling different parts of Panjab, India and the world to pay their respects.

The Indian army mercilessly massacred nearly 3,000 innocent Sikh pilgrims. Sri Akaal Takht Sahib, the Sikh's Supreme Seat of Authority, was attacked with bullets and fire from Army tanks, to be reduced to rubble. However, during the attack on Sri Harmandar Sahib Ji, Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa and 300 chardikala Gursikhs freedom fighters laid down their lives and became Shaheeds (martyrs) in defending Sri Akaal Takht Sahib Ji. The brave fearless lion fell fighting till his last breath. On une 7th 1984 Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale's body was found near the Nishaan Sahibs near Sri Akaal Takht Sahib Ji. Nearby lay the bodies of the warriors and protectors of faith, Shaheed Bhai Amrik Singh Ji, Shaheed General Bhai Subheg Singh Ji and Shaheed P.A. Rachpal Singh Ji who all died fighting till their last breath to upkeep the sanctity and dignity of Sri Akaal Takht Sahib Ji and for Sikhs to have justice and freedom.

Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale is a Sikh hero and inspiration to the millions of Sikhs living across the world. Young and old were inspired by Baba Ji's love for the truth, fearlessness to speak and expose the truth, and his courage to die fighting for Dharam Yudh Morcha, a movement which demanded justice and human rights for the Sikhs of India. After Operation Bluestar young and old Sikhs took Amrit being inspired by the Gursikhi Jeevan (life) and sacrifice of the great Shaheeds of the Ghallughara (Dark Genocide) of 1984. Even to this day Baba Ji's life, achievements, fearlessness to expose corrupt leaders and demand for truth and justice is an inspiration to all Sikhs worldwide.

Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa was not like the so called "Sants" and "Babas" of today who quietly allow people touch their feet and promote themselves with the titles "Sant". Once a journalist came to see Baba Jarnail Singh Ji and asked him, "Sant Ji how are you today?" Baba Jarnail Singh Ji humourosuly and humbly replied, "I am fine and well but I am not sure about the 'Sant'?" Baba Ji never allowed any Sikh to bow down or touch his feet, irrespective of how much the Sangat loved him and wanted to touch his feet. Being a true Gursikh, a true Maha-Purkh, a true Sant-Sipaahi (Saint-Warrior) he always told the Sangat to bow before the True Master, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and follow the Guru's Panth.

Today we should remember and honour Shaheed Baba Jarnail Singh Ji and the other great Shaheeds who lived and died for Guru Ji and the Panth. Let us all be inspired by their fearlessness, courage and their Gursikhi Jeevan to expose today's anti-Panthic so called Sikh leaders, corrupt Gurdwara Parbandhak Committees who have made Gurdwaras into Pub-Clubs, and unite under Guru Granth Sahib and the Guru Panth in standing up for our rights and justice.
