The Sikh religion differs from the Christianity that many of us here in the West were taught, in several ways. The very first teaching of Sikhi, the very first words of the Sikh scripture (called the Sri Guru Granth Sahib - Great Wise Book Teacher) are "Ik Ong Kaar".

The Creator and the Creation are One.

For a Sikh, God does not stand separate from Creation one bit. The Creator of the Universe IS the Universe - at the level of the atom and at the level of the quasars, the level of the primal void, and at the level of our primate dramas as well. And though humanity is just one little predatory species on some wee planet in some average galaxy hanging somewhere unremarkable in the vast Cosmos, Sikhs believe that the Creator/Creation (the All That Is, or God) is conscious of our every thought and longing and prayer, and that God is profoundly, intimately, loving and caring of each of us.

Yet God is always too infinite in every direction to fully understand or compute using our puny brains.

This is the Sikh cosmology, as I understand it.

Thus, Sikhs do not believe in Original Sin or that Nature is fallen.

The Sikh scripture/Guru also assumes that there is reincarnation.

The Sri Guru Granth of the Sikhs teaches that humans everywhere need to have a teacher (like Buddha or Jesus) - and the Sikh scripture offers to serve this function for you if you wish it. Otherwise the Great Teacher/Guide/scripture of the Sikh religion will simply give you some good advice and prayers so that you can get more connected to our own True Teacher(s) this life - independent of your culture, religion, or lack of religion.

The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the actual teachings (hymns, poetry), written hundreds of years ago, by a multicultural set of enlightened souls from Northern India. As a composite being, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib is called Nanak.

Here, from page 603 of the SGGS, is an example of what Nanak has to say about True Mentors:

SORAT'H, THIRD MEHL, FIRST HOUSE:

A True Teacher/Guru (like Jesus or Buddha or the Sri Guru Granth) is an ocean of peace in the world - there is no better place of rest and peace. The world is afflicted with the painful disease of egotism - dying, only to be reborn, it cries out in pain.

O mind, serve the True Teacher/Guru, and obtain peace. If you serve a True Teacher/Guru you shall find peace - otherwise, you shall depart, after wasting away your life in vain again.

(Pause and consider these teachings)

Led around by the three qualities (our laziness, our busyness, and our need to be sublime and get high) we do many deeds, but we do not come to taste and savor the subtle essence of Creator/Creation. We may say our evening prayers, and makes offerings of water (or other rituals) and then recite our morning prayers - but without true understanding, we still suffer in pain.

One who serves the True Teacher/Guru is very fortunate.

As the Creator of the Cosmos so wills, we encounter our True Teacher/Guru each life. Then we drink in the sublime essence of God.

We humble servants of the Divine One everywhere, we remain ever satisfied when we eradicate self-conceit from within ourselves.

This world is blind, and all here act blindly. Without a True Teacher/Guru no one finds the Path.

O Nanak, meeting with the True Teacher/Guru, we suddenly see with the Guru/Teacher's eyes, and we find God within the home of our very own being.
