A man once asked Guru Gobind Singh, "Your Sikhs are pure, they are absolutely one, why are you asking them of this maryada, this discipline?"

Guru Gobind Singh answered, "24 carat gold is 24 carat gold, and it is absolutely pure. So why do you touch it on the stone to know its purity?"

The man answered, "To prove it is 24 carat."

Guru Gobind Singh replied, "That is why I have given them discipline - to prove to them they are pure."
