Name of God is the nucleous of Sikh religion. So naam japna-simrana is of great significance. There are separate systems of meditation and prayers to God in every religion. Sikh religion has got its own that name of God must be imbued in ones mind so as to be the permanent presence of God in the mind, which burns the ego, eliminates the vices and inculcates virtues, to enable one to live truthful living and get the grace of God to unite with Him. The innitial stages are the hearing, singing and repeating name of God and then acceptng it in the mind so as to make the mind abode of God. It has to be done with full faith and concentration of the mind so as not to enter the stray thoughts in it, which are otherwise keeping it always wandering in different directions. Mere repitition without such restraints is not of much benefits. It has been clarified in a Divine declarations of Gurbani, that,
"every one repeats name of God but by mere empty repitition it does not serve the purpose as it can only be benificial if God abides in the mind by the kindness of the Guru."
"Ram Ram sabh ko kahe, kahea Ram na hoe
Gur parsadi nam man vase ta kuchh pawai soe"
Guru Nanak, founder of Sikh religion, proclaimed,
" He whose mind is imbued with God's name tells the truth."
and GGS-422
"If one remembers God's name, his mind wavers not and he stops and restrains the mind' wandering" GGS-634
Guru Nanak proclaimed God of name to be above every thing else-
"Meditation in the name of God is the essence of all the worships and penances" GGS-661 and
"By practicing stubborn self torture, the body wears off. Through fasting and penenance the soul is softened not. Nothing else equals to name of God." GGS-905
Sikh religion advocates to live in God' Will, a truthful living, burning the ego and doing good deeds with humility and service to humanity while earning with honest means and sharing it with the needy. For the meditation in the name of God in the Sikh way, one must do the virtuous deeds as the meditation without virtues is not possible. Desire free life, remaining dead in life, to weed out evils, to efface the conceit, to practise truth and contentment, pure conduct, to renounce lust, wrath, deceit and moral sins are to be practised to meditate in the name of God to attain the aim.
It is both ways, the virtues are needed to meditate in the name of God and the ego and vices are to be effaced while the name of God will further destroy the evils and to never enter again in the mind and inculcate the remaining virtues, never to be lost. In fact when God abides in the mind, then it will not allow to wander it on useless thoughts, which rather will not enter the mind. That is why Sikh religion requires the mind to be imbued with name of God to always feel the presence of God in it.
It is altogather differrent from that of those who believed in individual moksha and nirvan like yogis and Budhists without any social responsibility. It is rather to attain salvation in life itself and help others to attain it on the dictum,-meditate in God' name and make others to meditate. It is nothing to do with any postures and metholody of those meditators.
Guru Nanak made it clear in his Divine proclaimations,
"He who does the deeds in God'will,o Nanak is absorbed in the truest of the true." GGS-905
"Weed out evil wickedness and sin. Leaving these and becoming single minded meditate on name of god." GGS-23
"If a man effaces his conceit, he obtains the name then'
ggs-153
"HE WHO REMAINS DEAD IN LIFE IS SAVED AND SAVES OTHERS" gGs-413
"THEY WHO PRACTISE TRUTH, CONTENTMENT, AND LOVE OBTAIN THE VIATICUM OF NAME OF gOD" ggs-422
"RENOUNCING LUST, WRATH, DECEIT, AND MORAL SINS CLASP THE TRUE NAME OF gOD IN THE HEART. ggs-436
"IN THE PURE VESSAL IS CONTAINED THE TRUE NAME. A FEW INDEED ARE BLESSED WITH PURE CONDUCT." ggs-697
"iF ONE SEEKS THE PROTECTION OF GOD, THEN IN HIM MUST ABIDE THE TRUTH, CONTENTMENT, CHASTITY, CHARITY AND SELF CONTROL." ggs-1037
GURBANI AS CONTAINED IN GURU GRANTH SAHIB IS ITSELF NAAM AS IT MAKES THE DEVOTED READER TO FEEL PRESENCE OF GOD IN HIS MIND. IT DESTROYS THE EVIL INTELLECT. IT SHOWS THE LORD BY SHEDDING THE DIVINE LIGHT AND MAKES ONE TO UNITE WITH GOD AND TO RECOGNISE ONE' OWNSELF. IT NEEDS TO BE RECITED, UNDERSTOOD AND ACTED UPON WITH PURITY OF HEART AND THE DEVOTION IT DESERVES.
GURU NANAK DECLARED IN HIS DIVINE DECLARATIONS,
"WITH THE TRUE WOODEN SLATE OF THE TRUE MIND, READ THOU THE SUPREMELY GURBANI. NANAK, HE ALONE IS THE LEARNED AND WISE SCHOLAR WHO WEARS THE NECKLACE OF NAME OF GOD." GGS-938
"GURU'WORD-GURBANI IS THE JEWEL, WHICH OF ITSELF SHOWS THE LORD BY SHEDDING DIVINE LIGHT. RECOGNISING ONE'S OWNSELF THROUGH GURU'S INSTRUCTIONS, ONE MERGES IN THE TRUE LORD." GGS-1290
