Shri Guru Arjan Dev says that whatever tastes you have enjoyed so far or you would enjoy in future, with those O’ Mind your desire would never be stilled. If you taste the Nectar of NAM you would be dumbstruck and say as to what a wonderful taste it has. Quotation Gurbani is as under:

“All other relishes, which you taste with them the desire is not stilled even partly. If you taste the sweetness of God’s Nectar, you would be surprised on tasting it.”
Page 180/13

In Gurbani the words Nectar of NAM, Imperishable Nectar, God’s Elixir are synonymous terms. The Gurbani tells that whosoever has experienced the Creator Lord they have relished the taste of Nectar of NAM and they were surprised after taking it and were wonderstruck.

“He, who experiences the Lord enjoys the taste of Nectar of NAM. He is wonderstruck and amazed by tasting this Nectar.
Page 285/2

“He who tastes it, knows its relish and enjoys it. Bur he cannot explain it like a dumb man who can only enjoy a taste in his mind but cannot explain it.”
Page 801/13

These questions mean that only a person who tastes the Nectar of NAM enjoys its relish but cannot explain its taste to others like a dumb man cannot explain the taste of sweets he is eating but can only enjoy that taste. Just like that a person who experiences God and tastes the Nectar of NAM continues enjoying its taste and remains surprised and happy but cannot explain it exactly.

“He alone, who obtains the relish of NAM, understands it. Seeing and beholding it, he is wonderstruck in his mind.”
Page 1338/5

“He, who drinks God’s Elixir, ever remains imbuded I it. All other relishes wear off in a moment. Intoxicated with Lord’s essence one is ever happy in his mind. In other revelments, anxiety befalls one. He who drinks God’s Elixir is inebriated and intoxicated. All other tastes and pleasures are paltry. Pause.

The value of Lord’s ambrosia cannot be told. God’s Elixir is in the mind of saints and can be obtained in their company. With millions and millions (of rupees) one cannot get it. He, who is destined to obtain it, he alone gets it. By tasting it Nanak (Shri Guru Arjan Dev) has become wonderstruck. I (Shri Guru Arjan Dev) have obtained its relish through Guru Nanak. Here and hereafter, leaving it I (Shri Guru Arjan Dev) go nowhere else.
Nanak (Shri Guru Arjan Dev) has become enamoured of God’s essence.”
Page 377/10

In the above quotation Shri Guru Arjan Dev is telling his own experience about Nectar of NAM,. The word Nanak has been used thrice in this couplet. Firstly it (Nanak) means Shri Guru Arjan Dev. In the next line Nanak means Shri Guru Nanak Dev as Shri Guru Arjan Dev achieved this Elixir through Guru Nanak. And in the last line word Nanak means Shri Guru Arjan Dev who has become enamoured of God’s Elixir. He who drinks God’s Nectar is inebriated and intoxicated. All other tastes and pleasures are paltry and cannot match Nectar of NAM as their tastes are only momentary and then vanishes. One who tastes God’s Elixir he remains ever happy in mind and remains intoxicated with God’s presence. In other revelments one remains anxious while after tasting Nectar of NAM one becomes balanced and keeps his equilibrium of mind. Hearing the virtues of God’s Elixir the person desirous of getting it asks “Sir, from where can I get this Nectar of NAM? What is its price how can it be obtained? In answer to this question Shri Guru Arjan Dev tells him that this Nectar is priceless. It is with the saints and cannot be purchased with millions and millions (of rupees). One can get it only by living in the company of the saints. Because a real saint would always connect the soul to NAM, tell him the correct method of meditating on NAM and in this manner, one can experience God. In the last lines of the above quotation Shri Guru Arjan Dev tells that now his mind goes nowhere else and remains imbued in God’s Elixir and has become enamoured of God’s essence.

Again Shri Guru Arjan Dev tells his own experience about Nectar of NAM as under:

“I enjoy the God’s relish of relishes my desire and hunger has been appeased. Nanak is absorbed in the Lord, O’ My soul.”
Page 409/16

Then he (Shri Guru Arjan Dev) encourages us to taste the Nectar of NAM and guarantees that all our desires would be stilled.

“O’ brother saint, if you taste God’s ambrosia; then how can you be enamoured of other relishes. Pause.”
Page 733/2

“Whosoever has tasted God’s Elixir his desire is stilled.”
Page 211/17

In Sukhmani Sahib Shri Guru Arjan Dev says that whosoever has tasted Nectar of NAM their desire is stilled. They become perfect persons and so not waiver. They are filled to the brim with the sweetness and delight of God’s love. In their company one become desirous of obtaining the Elixir:

“The mortals who partake of God’s ambrosia are satiated. They become perfect persons and waiver not. They are completely filled with the sweetness and delight of Lord’s love. In the society of saints one becomes desirous of obtaining God’s Elixir.”
Page 289/13

Gurbani says that those who are satiated with Nectar of NAM their mind and body remains merged in NAM. They continue repeating NAM while moving, sitting or sleeping.

“The persons who are satiated with NAM’s Nectar, their body and soul remain merged in NAM alone. To meditate in NAM while moving, sitting or sleeping, says Nanak, is ever, the evocation of God’s slave.”
Page 286/5

Gurbani instructs us to forsake the insipid water of sin and enjoy the supreme Nectar of NAM as without tasting NAM, all are being drowned (in the attachment of creation) and their soul does not become happy.

“For sake the insipid water of sin, O’ My friend and enjoy the supreme Nectar of NAM. Without tasting this Nectar all have drowned (in the attachment of creation) and their souls are not happy.”
Page 802/18

Shri Guru Amar Das says in Anand Sahib:

“O’ my tongue, you are engrossed in other relishes and so your thirst (desire) does not depart.
Your desires shall not be stilled by any other means unless you attain the Lord’s Elixir.
If you get the Nectar of NAM drink it your desire (for wordily things) shall not effect you again. This elixir of God is obtained by God’s Grace by him whom the True Guru meets.
(Because only a true Guru tells the correct method of mediating on NAM).
Nanak says that when the Lord abides in man’s mind he forgets all other relishes and remains imbued in God’s Elixir.
Page 921/1

Shri Guru Nanak Dev was asked if there is any taste/ relish better than the relish of God’s Elixir. In answer to this he says:

“What else can be said to be above the God’s Elixir?
He who enjoys Gods Elixir is satiated.”
Page 598/14

It clearly implies that the Nectar of NAM is the supreme Elixir and it stills all desires. Gurbani says that just by hearing or talking about God’s Elixir one cannot expeience it and so cannot enjot its taste. Only those who have tasted it know it and continue torelish it but cannto exactlly ecplain it as a dumb man cannot explain the taste of sweets he is eating.

“They alone who taste it (God’s Elixir), know its relish like a dumb man rnhoying sweets.”
Page 635/1

In the relishes provided by mammon the best taste is considered to be of sex and sexual inter-course. But after enjoying sex one cannot remain in same state of mind. One does not remain in the same high spirits and experiences depression and sex cannot be enjoyed continuously. But the taste of NAM-Nectar can be enjoyed continuously, there is no depression or break in this enjoyment. Only those who have tasted NAM know this fact and those who are engrossed in the tastes/ relishes of mammon cannot comprehend this. For them tastes/relishes of mammon are the best things.

A person desirous of obtaining God’s Elixir appeared before Shri Guru Ram Das and said with folded hands:

I have heard the manifold virtues of God’s Elixir. One’s desire about all other relishes is stilled after enjoying the taste of this Nectar and the mind remains ever happy thereafter. Please tell the method of obtaining it because I am clear in mymind that Nectar of NAM is supreme Elixir and without enjoying it desir of other relishes cannot be stilled.” Shri Guru Ram Das told him to approach the realised souls and to ask them as to how they obtained unison with God and had become filled with Nectar of NAM. See how much respect Shri Guru Ram Das is giving to his sikhs (disciples who had realised God) and tells the new comers to go to those realised souls and ask this question to them. When he goes to such realised souls, those sikhs who were enamoured of the Lotus feet of Shri Guru Ram Das they remain imbued in the Lotus feet of Sat -Guru and give no answer because they feel they are not competent to guide others when Shri Guru Ram Das is available. That person goes to Shri Guru Tam Das and informs him that he had gone to the realised souls and tried to get guidance from them for obtaining God’s Elixir, but they kept quite and did not give any reply. Shri Guru Ram Das again told him to go and live in their company and serve them. The seeker again goes to the realised souls, lives in their company, serves them and when convinced that he is a genuine seeker of Truth, they tell him that the only method to achieve unison with God is to obey Guru’s words (Gurbani) which is like a jewel. It means that the Guru’s instructions as given in Gurbani have to be obeyed. Whosoever will obey these instructions would enjoy the supreme taste of God’s Elixir and this is the only method. The Quotation of about the above incident is as under:

“The relish to immortalizing Nectar of NAM is aquisietly fine, In what way can I obtain the nectar and enjoy it?
Go and ask the true wives (of God i.e. realised souls) as to how they achieved unison with the Lord? (The seeker goes to realised souls and asks them the same question but they did not answer him and he again comes back to Shri Guru Ram Das and tells him) they (the realised souls) are carefree and have not replied to my question though I repeatedly rubbed and washed their feet. (Shri Guru Ram Das again tells him) O’ brother go and meet those friends (realised souls) and in their company sing the praises of God. The real friend is the True Guru (Guide) who is all competent and beats out and drives away the pangs of pride i.e. ego. Pause.

(He again goes back to the realises soul, lives and sings praises of God in their company and when the realised souls are convinced (about his sincerity) the realised souls are moved with compassion (and tell him the method of union with God which is give in the next lines) The word of True Guru is the emerald. He who obeys the word of true Guru (Gurbani) he tasted God’s Elixir.”
Page 41/9

Now it is clear that by obeying the instructions of True Guru (Gurbani) one obtains God’s Elixir. The question naturally arises as to what are the instructions of True Guru. Unless instructions we cannot obey them. These instructions, to be obeyed are given in Gurbani and are quoted as under:

“He, who is known as a sikh (disciple) of the Great True Guru, should wake up early in the morning and meditate on God’s NAM. He should rise early in the morning and take a bath in Tank of Nectar. (Tank of Nectar is in the body itself and the mind should bathe in it with the help of the WORD – Gurbani. It means that the mind should meditate on God with the help of WORD – Gurbani and this is taking a bath in the Tank of Nectar.

He should repeat the Lord’s NAM through the Guru’s instructions (Gurbani) and by doing this all his sins, misdeeds and accusations are wiped off. After-words, at sunrise he should sing Gurbani and while sitting or standing (i.e. always) he should continue to meditate on God’s NAM. The Guru’s sikh (disciple) who with every breath and morsel (i.e. continuously) contemplates over my Lord God, he is liked by the Guru. He unto whom the Lord shows mercy, to him the Guru imparts his instruction.

Slave Nanak asks for dust of the feet of that sikh of the Guru, who himself contemplates on God’s NAM and makes others contemplate thereon.”

“O’ traders, strike the bargain the purchase the (true) merchandise. Purchase such goods, which may remain with you forever. In the next world the wisest Merchant (Master-God) will take and preserve the genuine article only. O’ brother, repeat God’s NAM with rapt attention.
Take and depart (from this world) with the merchandise of god’s praises. The spouse shall be satisfied on viewing these (the treasure of the praises of God). Pause. Those who do not have the capital of Truth (God’s NAM) how can they find peace (of mind).
By dealing in false trade (perishable items of creation), the soul and body becomes false. Like the dear ensnared in a snake, they (who indulge in false trade) come to great frief and bewail forever and forever.
The counterfeits (souls) are not consigned to the treasury (of the Lord) and do not obtain the sight of great God. The false one (soul which indulges in the trade of items of creations) has no caste or honour and no one can succeed through falsehood i.e. by trading in items of creation.
The untrue mortal practices untruth (falsehood) and insulted and sent into existences again and again i.e. his cycle of death and birth never ends and soul continues to suffer. O’ Nanak, instruct the mind with Guru’s Word, which is praise-worthy. Those who are; imbued in the Love of NAM of All-pervading Lord, have no loads of sins and no superstition. Those who meditate on God earn a great profit, and Fearless God abides in their mind.”
Page 22/18

“The treasurer NAM-Nectar,, to obtain which you have come into world, that imperishable Elixir is with the Guru (True guide). Give up (wearing of specific garbs, disguises (it means that wearing of particular DRESS of a particular color and design is not helpful and creates hurdles as it increases one’s ego) and cleverness (worldly knowledge of different subjects does sharpen one’s intellect and make a man clever but cannot help in achieving unison with God) as all these increase one’s ego and the mind remains in duality and fruit and NAM-Nectar is obtained not.

O’ my soul remain steady (remain attached with the WORD (Gurbani) and do not wonder anywhere else. (In attachment of creation). Searching NAM-Nectar outside your mind in the mammon you shall suffer much pain and discomfort. The NAM-Nectar is in your heart itself (and try to find it with the help of WORD-Gurbani). Pause.

For sake sins and pursue virtues. By committing sins you shall regret. Those who do not know the difference between bad deeds (sins) and good deeds (virtues) and act in self-willingness, sink in the mire of sins again and again (and their cycle of death and birth continues)., if within the mind the great filth of greed and falsehood is there, it is useless to was one’s body *in the holy water of different religious places at specific times i.e. on accepted days such as purnima (Full moon-night), Amavas (Moonless night), Eclipse of sun or moon or other accepted festivals)

Ever utter the immaculate NAM, under Guru’s instruction (according to) Gurbani) and then alone your soul would be emancipated. Abandon greed (for items of creation) slander (of others) and falsehood (attachment of creation) and abiding by Guru’s instruction (Gurbani) you shall obtain the fruit of Eternal – NAM. (While abandoning above sins of greed, slander, falsehood etc. and ever uttering immaculate NAM according to Gurbani i.e. ever singing the praises of God’ also pray to HIM).
As it pleases you so do please save me (from the clutches of mammon) O’ revered Destroyer of sins (God) as slave Nanak sings your praises with the help of the Word-Gurbani.”
