God gave us all human rights when the universe was created. Humans may, by the exercise of power, prevent people from exercising these rights, but they cannot take them away. Social change happens as fast as corrupt people can be educated or replaced. If a society decides to accomplish something, people can be replaced very quickly.
Sikh women are very lucky. The Sikh faith has always promoted universal equal rights, including the equal rights of women. We do not have to fight and claw and scratch for the vote like my great grandmother did here in the USA. Sikh women made history in the Women's Movement long, long ago.
I lived through the second wave of the Women's Movement here in the USA, which went very quickly. In the 1970s we changed the face of my culture and most of the reforms achieved at that time have been maintained since.
Now, women all around the world are busy with the third wave of the Women's Movement - a global movement.
Sikhs have every advantage. We already know what human men in authority positions tend to say to try to keep women from claiming our basic human rights.
"It takes time and struggle to attain basic human rights." Sikh leaders assert.
Clearly, this is a call to war.
If Sikh men say Sikh women will have to struggle for our rights, then I guess Sikh men have decided that they will make women struggle and suffer like men from less enlightened religions and cultures have.
Struggle to follow the Sri Guru's command?
Fight for our rights? Our God and Guru given rights?
You serious?
You are ON!
I have every faith that Sikh women will not back down from this challenge to fight for the Sikh Way!
Remember, God gave us all human rights when the universe was created. Humans may, by the exercise of power, prevent people from exercising these rights, but they cannot take them away. Social change happens as fast as corrupt people can be educated or replaced. If a society decides to accomplish something, people can be replaced very quickly.
Reform can happen very quickly. God is full of miracles when we are doing the Sri Guru's seva.
Meanwhile university women's studies departments and religious studies programs, are reading over our shoulders and starting to study the grand history of the Sikh Women's Movement.
Because Khalsa women are inspiring - always have been.
