In Gurbani NAM is not a noun alone. This word has been use in Gurbani for the Creator, Sustainer, Almighty, All-pervading, Ever-Eternal, Fearless, Revenge less, Immortal, Unborn and the Self-illuminating entity.

Definition of NAM in Gurbani is as under:

“NAM creates, pervades and sustains all creations.
NAM creates, pervades and sustains innumerable earths and solar systems.
NAM creates, pervades and sustains the simrities, the Vedas and the Puranas.
NAM creates, pervades and sustains the mortals who hear Divine knowledge and meditate.
NAM creates, pervades and sustains the skies and under worlds.
NAM creates, pervades and sustains all bodies/forms.
By hearing NAM and living in the company of NAM men cross the ocean of creations.”
Page 284/11

So NAM is that entity which has created all universes, spheres, solar systems, earths, creatures, visible and invisible world systems, different forms, shapes, colours, species etc. etc. and is pervading through all creations.

“The Lord, of Himself created Himself and created NAM, Secondly, He made the creation and Himself seated there in, He beholds it with delight.”
Page 463/4

NAM is formless. NAM is all competent-power. Sri Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Lord has called him Bhagauti in the prayer adopted by Sikh Panth. How great is this power? Scientific research done so far has proved that if ten Crore is multiplied by Ten Crore and result is again multiplied with ten Crore, so many solar systems have been counted with the help of telescopes so far. In one solar system, there is one sum, a number of planets and moons. These systems have been counted and reported by Americans with the help of their telescope. Russians are trying to manufacture a bigger telescope and may count more solar systems. When a renowned scientist gave this information to the author, the author just gave a smile. The scientist felt ignored/humiliated but immediately the author told him that Shri Guru Nanak Dev has said in Jap-jee Sahib:

“There are millions of nether-worlds below the nether worlds and millions of skies over the skies. Those who tried to find the limits (of the limitless God) they in the end grew weary of making efforts but could not define the limits…”
Page 5/2

The scientist after hearing the meaning of this quotation became a disciple o Sri Guru Nanak Dev. Though that scientist belonged to a Sikh family and even kept hair and beard but he never read Gurbani. Now the same scientist cleans the impure plates of the common kitchen, has become a true Sikh and is a loving example of ‘Faith & Belief’. In the ‘Realm of knowledge’ Gurbani says in Jap-jee Sahib:

“How many are wind, waters, fires, Krishna (Hindu deity) and Shivas (God of death)? How many are Brahmas (God of creation). Who are fashioning forms, and how many are buties, colour and raiments? How many are earths to do actions, moountains, Dhruvs (North Stars) to indicate direction? How many are Indras (Gods of rain), moons, suns, universes and countries? How many are proficients, Buddha (Gautam Buddha), great Yogis and goddesses? How many are deities, demons, sages, oceans and jewels? How many are the learned (who know Divine knowledge) servants (of God)? O’ NANAK there is not limit and all these are countless and countless.”

In the ‘Realm of Truth’ in the Jap-jee Sahib Gurbani says:

“(In that realm) The Formless Lord abides in the mind. The soul realises that God beholds the Creation, which he has created and casts his merciful glance overall. In this stage, the soul realises that there are countless continents, worlds, and solar systems. If soul tries to count/describe them, he can never find the end or the limits/bounds. There are universes upon universes and creations, over creations and as is the Lord’s mandate so are their functions. The Lord beholds his creation and enjoys looking after it. O’NANAK to describe the realm of truth is very hard like chewing a piece of steel.”

The entity possessing above qualities is the root of all and is not rooted in anything. That entity is Unborn, Almighty and Fathomless, Biggest of all, full of qualities/ virtues in the past, present & future, pure illuminating knowledge and is Incomprehensible. This greatest entity is the root/ base of all and is a gifter. That entity sustains all & destroys all its creation.

In Ruaal Chhand (couplet) No. 86 Sri Guru Gobind Singh says in Jaap Sahib that this entity is All-pervading, Detached, & is full of Elixir. This entity has no particular name, place caste, form, colour & flag. This entity existed before all creation and is All-competent, Merciful, Unborn, Deathless, Root/base of all & is All-pervading. It has no country dress. In all directions, corners and divisions of space it is pervading everywhere, it has no particular name or place to live and is desire less. It is respected in all places and all spheres. This entity is one and only one but it has created and is pervading innumerable visible forms. Doing numerous acts through different forms/creations it destroys creation and himself remains one & one only. Vedas (Religious Books of east) Katebs (Religious books of the west i.e. Bible, Angel, Teroot etc.) and gods can’t comprehend this entity as it is without form color, caste, dynasty etc. it is Unborn, Deathless, without mother, father or caste. Its eternal order is being obeyed in all the four directions and all the three worlds. (Earth, nether, worlds and skies). The whole creation, throughout the universes remembers HIM. This basic entity has no beginning. It has created all the creations, is All pervading, Boundless, All competent, Pure, Self-illuminating and is competent to create and destroy. This All-mighty, Deathless, All-pervading entity is beyond comprehension & without a country. It is without superstition, is Justice loving, without a body, does not wear a particular dress and is beyond comprehension. It has no particular body, colour, caste &: creed like other creatures. This entity destroys ego, destroys, sinners and also gives emancipation., it is Self-Illuminating, Fathomless and beyond praise, it is one, All pervading and Detached (from creation). I destroys, merges every thing in itself, root/base of all creation but Himself is Unborn. It is Imperishable, Formless, Boundless, gives life to all, sustains all, destroys all, pervades all & is still detached. No religious scriptures can know its form colour and shape. Scriptures (Vedas, Shastras) only say it is not like this, not like this. It cannot be reached through crores & crores of Simirities, Shastras & Purans.”

In ‘Akal Ustat’ (Praises of The Timeless) Guru Gobind Singh says that “I before all bow to one Lord who created water, earth, skies and creatures in these. That is the basic entity. Nobody can know its speed of action and it is Imperishable. Its shine illuminates all the (fourteen) universes. It is pervading in the biggest elephant and the smallest ant. Kings and beggars are equal in His eyes. He is matchless and cannot be comprehended. He is pure knowledge, pervading in all souls, Incomprehensible, Imperishable, without particular dress, without enemies, friends, sound color, shape and frame. He is from the very beginning and different from all other. Matchless and without desire. He has no particular color, form, caste, dynasty. He has no mother or father so He is beyond every form but pervades in water, earth, sky and in between and hence is nearest to all. His entity is Ever-Eternal and His ‘Word’ is pervading the universes. Durga (goddess of power) is under his complete control. Brahma (god of creation) L& Vishnu (god of sustenance) did not comprehend HIM completely, Brahma said “He is infinite. He is infinite. “He has created crores and crores of Indras (god of rain) & other incarnations, created & destroyed crores of Brahmas :& Vishnus, created a wonderful game of creation. He has created innumerable demons, gods, ShesNags, Gandharvs etc. He was praised in the past, is being praised now & would ever be praise in future. He won has no father & mother, caste or creed is knower of inner feelings of all and is not attached to creation, though illuminating every where. Every human being can achieve unison with him sitting anywhere. He is timeless, Incomprehensible, Formless, Pure Caste less, Creed less, Colorless, Imperishable & without superstition. He is Creator & Destroyer of all. He destroys diseases, discomforts and depression. Anybody who remembers him with rapt attention even for a moment gets emancipated.”

Above quotations prove that Sikhs have to remember the NAM having above mentioned qualities/virtues. These quotations also prove that NAM is all pervading. Now the question arises that if NAM is all pervading then why do not we see or experience it? This question has been answered by Sri Guru Amar Das & he says that NAM is imperceptibly pervading the creation in this age (KAL-Yug) & is pervading in every soul. This jewel of NAM is experienced by those souls who take the shelter of Guru (True guide):

"NAM is imperceptibly pervading in this DARKAGE (Kal-Yug) and Lord is fulfilling every heart. The Jewel of NAM becomes manifest in the mind of those who run & take the shelter of GURU."
Page 1334/14

"The mind is full to the brim with Nectar but the perverse know not its relish. Just as the deer does not know that its musk is in its belly and wanders about (to find it) guiled by doubt.
Page 644/2

Sri Guru Teg Bahadur says:

"Why you go O' man, to search God in the forests? God, though ever detached, dwells everywhere and lives in you as fragrance abides in the flower and reflection in the mirror. So does God dwell in you and search him in you heart. O' brother."
Page 684/14

Shri Guru Arjan Dev says:

"The medicine (NAM) which destroys sins is in every heart O' brother. Except the perfect Guru, no one knows the method to use it. When the perfect Guru tells the method (Do's and don's) of using this medicine (and by acting on his instructions) the man sickens not again.
Page 259/15

"The wall of ego and pride intervenes between me & HIM, though he is heard to be close by in the country (of heart). Between me and HIM is the fine curtain like the wings of a butter-fly but seeing HIM not I deem him distant."
Page 624/10

Shri Guru Ram Das says:

"The bride (soul) and the groom (God) dwell together, but in-between them is the hard wall of ego. The perfect Guru has demolished the wall of ego and slave NANAK has met his Lord who wears the rosary of Banaspati (all greenery)."
Page 1263/4

One need not go in search of the perfect Guru. Sri Guru Ram Das has clarified as to who is a perfect Guru. He says:

"Nanak Guru is the perfect Guru. Meeting that true Guru I contemplated 'NAM."
Page 882/7

He repeats this again so that sikhs may not go astray by learning this fundamental principle & then try to find a perfect Guru. He says:

"Nanak Guru is the true Guru and I pray that I may get his shelter."
Page 1310/14

The above two quotations mean that Guru Nanak is the perfect and true Guru and meeting with him Guru Ram Das says, he contemplated NAM. We must remember these quotations so that an imperfect, so called Guru, may not mislead us.

Now let us come to the basic issue that without demolishing the intervening wall of ego, NAM cannot be experienced/ realised. Automatically the question arises as to what is this ego?
